DePauw Police and Security is investigating the involvement of freshman Daniel Mendoza in a fight at Coan Apartments at 1:30 a.m. Sunday. No charges have been filed.

Mark Freeman, director of police and security, said Mendoza and witnesses are being questioned. Police crime logs indicated an assault took place.

Senior Jeffrey Martin, a resident of Coan Apartments, said he returned to his room and found Mendoza there, uninvited. Martin said that Mendoza refused to leave and began pushing him and his guests. At that point another Coan resident, Gilbert Duran, punched Mendoza repeatedly in the right side of the face.

"If Duran hadn't done it, one of us would have," Martin said. "It was out of defense for the people in the room."

At 1:35 a.m. Sunday, DePauw police and two ambulances were called to Coan apartments. Mendoza went to Putnam County Hospital, where he was later transported to Indianapolis for further treatment.

"He drank my alcohol," Martin said. "He drank a bottle of tequila, a bottle of wine and three beers. He seemed very, very drunk. Everyone yelled at him to get out."

Duran said this is his first encounter with violence at Coan Apartments.

"I lived here last year. It's a pretty quiet place. But [Mendoza] was harassing people," Duran said. "He told my roommate if he didn't get him a girl, he'd kick his ass."

Martin said Mendoza became more belligerent when he threatened to call the police.

"I was ready to call the cops and the energy rose even more," Martin said.

Mendoza said he couldn't explain why he was at Coan Apartments.

"I was just there," he said.

Mendoza said the incident is still very unclear to him. He said he was only bothering the residents and never physically started anything.

"I just want to apologize for what happened," he said.
